A Fierce 5K Race

Carli & Mezzy Before the 5K

Today was Awesome.  Where do I begin? The alarm went off at 6 this morning, and unlike yesterday, I wasn’t able to go back to sleep after I hit snooze, because I was too excited.  Once I got up, my stomach was a little upset, I wondered if it was nerves like before.  I realized, I’m not nervous…so what’s wrong?  Then I remembered it could be the late night ice cream coupled with me being lactose intolerant.  Silly me.  Anyway, last night, I had everything laid out from my socks to my iPod.  So it was totally stress free getting ready.

Dont let the label fool you! It was just a 5K

I picked up my little sister and we got to the race about 40 minutes before the start time.  After the star spangled banner, and right before time to take off running, she said, “I’ll start the race with you.”  I thought that was so nice.  However, when she said “start” she literally meant start.  After about 30 seconds, that girl was gone!  And after about five minutes all I could see was her hair blowing the spring breeze.  I was doing a light jog, and I got to mile marker 1 in about 15 minutes.  A lady came up from behind me and said you inspired me so much I had to catch up with you.  That made me feel really good.  They had small cup of water for us at the half way point.  I drank it and continued to wogging (walking and jogging).  I kept thinking this is so much easier than last year.   It was still challenging, and my legs calves were burning, but it was do-able.  Destiny’s Child’s song Survivor got me through the tough part.  I kept pushing through, until I saw the 3 Mile marker.  I panicked because I didn’t see the finish line…where is it? What happened? Did they move it?  Why are we running past it?  Then I remembered, Oh yeah…. a 5k is 3.1 Miles, I had to laugh out loud.   Then I saw my Dad waving and cheering me on.  The rest of my crew was at the finish line, screaming, Yay! Carli! This lady next to me said you sure have a lot of fans!  I wanted to tell her I threatened all of them LOL!  I crossed the finish line in 51 minutes.  I shaved 4 minutes off my time from last year.  My little sister was already on the other side cheering like she was just a fan and supporter.  She had already finished the race in 38 minutes!  I was so happy and proud of her.  She might have left me behind, but that’s okay, because she gave that race all she had.  The race people gave me my medal and we went to the refreshment stand.  One lady gave me 2 bottles of water, I guess I looked thirsty.  The other tried to hand me cookies.  I politely declined the fudge striped deliciousness and got the pretzels.  (I still can’t believe I actually gave up cookies.)… I love my family and friends, they’re the best!  We got some great pics, and my Big Little sister got an awesome video of me crossing the finish line and Mom trying to pretend like she didn’t cry when my little sister crossed the finish line.  Just when I thought the excitement was over, I noticed that there were still people crossing the finish line.  I was inspired that they continued to walk and run past the 1 hr point and well after they took the time clock down.  There were two ladies walking in green shirts.  The one supporting the other had “NF” on her shirt.  My sister explained that the other lady had a pic of the sign language hand symbols for NF.  I asked what it stood for and her other friends said Neurofibromatosis, a nervous system disorder.  They told me that the lady had recently lost her hearing due to tumors and set a goal to do a 5K. The lady was limping and clearly exhausted, but her friends cheered her on.  When she crossed the finish line, everyone in the crowd cheered, you could feel her victory and she collapsed.  I quickly passed that extra bottle of water over the fence.  She didn’t pass out or anything, she was okay, just needed to rest after completing her journey.  It was just a reminder that no matter how big your challenges are, you can overcome them and reach your goals….check out the my race day pics and my video (I didn’t realize I was so fluffy, heck I’d be inspired too if I saw me running LOL!) Now I just have to figure out what’s next.

I Am An All-Star 5 K Runner!

all-star-5k
Go Carli it’s your Birthday!  Okay, so it’s not my B-day, but it felt like it.  This morning when I got up at 6AM, I was so nervous that I was almost sick to my stomach.  I had to pray and calm myself down.  When I got in the car Maurette Brown Clark’s song “It Ain’t Over” was on the radio, and gave me a big burst of inspiration.  I reminded myself that I’ve done this before, and I can do it again.  I stood with the crowd of 8,000 as we listened to Susan G. Komen’s sister give us words of encouragement.  The Governor and Shawn Johnson, gold-medal winner on the balance beam at the 2008 Olympics and winner of ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, were also there to run in the race.  Cardinal’s Hall of Famer Lou Brock sounded the horn, and we were off.  I didn’t let all the skinny people whizzing past me worry me.  I was there to beat my time, not theirs.  I kept a steady pace, and fed myself positive thoughts.  “You have a website about running, you want to encourage others, you don’t want to be last, you’re almost done.”  I took a swig of Gatorade at the refresh stand and kept it moving.  The 1st mile is always the hardest.  I was completely shocked when I saw the 2 mile marker, as my iPod was a little behind on the distance.  When I had about a half of a mile to go, the pavement texture changed, and I felt a blister on the bottom of my foot, and my feet starting tingling.  “What the heck is going on I asked?”  I’ve never had a blister, or tingling numb feet.  I didn’t have time to figure it out, and I was super excited when I checked my time.  I knew if I kept my pace, I could beat my original race time of 54 Minutes.  When I was about 2 blocks from the finish line, there was my brother in law, the only person downtown in a Sunday Suit, video recording my final push.  I turned the corner and saw the finish line, and the clock said 50 Minutes!  I did it; the feeling was so overwhelming yet exhilarating.  Everyone should experience the natural high of crossing the finish line.   I met my goals, I wasn’t last, and I beat my time!  Miss Missouri, gave me my medal that I proudly wore around my neck.  This time when they asked ”How do you Feel?”  My answer was “Great!!!” A Fierce Finish Line Pic

Komen Race for the Cure

race-for-the-cure1This weekend was jam packed. We had lots of family in town for my Grandmother’s 75th B-Day Party.  Everyone was hanging out the night before eating Chinese Food at 11 PM… I choose to eat grapes and drink diet coke.   I can’t say I was as disciplined at the actual party, but hey I walked 3 miles in the blazing heat Saturday morning…What started off as a means for me to exercise and stay fit, turned into a wonderful unforgettable experience.  This morning I got up at 6:30 AM and got ready for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer 5K walk.  I was a lot less anxious than I was for my 1st 5K, since I was only walking, and not worried about my finish time.  As I waited for the Metro Link train to take me downtown, I began to see all the ladies in their pink survivor t-shirts.  I was a little emotional as one of my best friends lost his Mom to cancer earlier this year.  I walked today in memory of her and to help find a cure for all the women who have to fight this disease.  While we meandered through a sea of people, if you looked forward or behind, there were supporters as far as the eye could see…I was told there were 66,000 participants.  It was hot and humid, but ironic how no one seemed to mind.  We crossed the finish line in about 1hr and 20 minutes.  When I got home everyone was proud that I completed another 5K for such a good cause, and of course they teased me for my new chocolatey tan.

My Big 5K Race Day! I MADE IT!!!!

finish-lineToday was my Big Race Day.  I must admit I’m so proud to say, I Made It!  I jogged for 3.1 miles.  My 2 goals were to finish in under an hour, and not to come in last.  I met both of them!  While listening to the Rocky Theme song, I crossed the finish line in 54 minutes, came in  638th Place, and ranked in the 89 %tile… and you know what, I’m PROUD about it!!!  Everyone asked, “So how does it feel?”  My initial response as I limped around was “I  hurt” …But in reality, 2 months ago when I started training; running for 60 seconds felt like cruel and unusual punishment.  Now, I’m planning my next 5K.  I’m extremely proud of my success and know that I can do anything I put my mind to.  I’m going to do the Susan G. Komen race for the cure in June.  I’d like to shave 15 minutes or more off my time while doing to for a good cause.  So, this time around, I’ll not only be “spamming” you as one of my best friends said, but also asking for donations… Thanks so much to my family and friends who came out so early on a damp morning,  and those who supported me with encouraging emails and phone calls…Check out my finish line pics!
