When Life Gives You Lemons…Become a Fitness Instructor?

Pretty Lemons Well, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is the original saying.  But I decided to do something a little different.  I got up this morning and went to the studio; my producer friend said it looked like I was “wasting away.”  Which I guess is a compliment from the same guy who tried to feed me cupcakes.  We finally finished Week 8 and 9 of the Couch to 5K podcasts!  I was so excited we’ve literally worked on this podcast for six months.  I’m so picky; I wanted every curse word edited, every song to fit right and flow with the groove with as many positive upbeat lyrics as possible.  It was a huge task, but we did it.  I’m so glad that I’ve already helped so many people. To date my podcasts have been downloaded over 2,000 times!

After I left the studio I went to Bread Co. for lunch and read a little more of the Purpose Driven Life which focused how we are here for God’s pleasure and not our own.  Then I went to the local library to do some research.  I literally haven’t been to the library in years.  It’s so fancy now, self-check out and a real DVD collection. I might as well tell you why I was there… Since the fish in the employment pond aren’t biting, I think I have to build my own pond.  I’m going to try and grow runningintoshape.com.  I  have huge dreams of creating a 5K to 10K podcast, and even making a fitness DVD.  There’s more, but I’ll save that for later!  I also signed up for the CPR/AED class with the Red Cross, which is a requirement to be a group fitness instructor.  I ordered the study materials and hope to take the test in the next couple of months.  I figure I should have more than real life experience when teaching others to get fit, so I’m getting the education/certification to back me up.  So there’s my recession plan…Wish me luck!  After the library, I went to personal training with Lyle.  We did a lot of ab work and I still feel it right now! I told him how much I’ve grown spiritually because of his program.  I didn’t get a chance to go running today, because I had to come home and draft the flyers and press releases for the job fair in a couple of weeks.  Since I spent a whole week in a lull, I’m not sure that I’ll be able to reach my original running goals, but I’m still going to go to the race, and give it all I got!

*Notices the comment boxes is now remembering who I am…*

It always bothers me when people who observe others losing weight and making comments like “You’re wasting away” or “You’re losing too much weight – you’d better stop now!” etc. It is the these same people who aren’t exactly the ideal image of fitness and seem to be determined to project their misery on to those who’ve bothered to get off the couch, apply some discipline and succeed with their lives. (end rant)

Anyhow, good to hear that you are taking the principles of determination to a whole new level and working to turn a profit of what you have created. Not just in the monetary sense or personal gain either… The world needs more people like yourself. :-)

Thank You! Of course there is a little voice in the back of my mind that says “seriously? you a fitness instructor?” But thats the same voice that said, you’re fat and miserable and doomed to stay that way. And more than 50 lbs later, and 3 5k’s later, I’m still pushing towards happiness and health. I’ve figured out that I don’t have my weight struggles because I’m cursed, but to better understand and help people in similar situations. Thank you so much for the uplifting words! It made my day!

There is very little substitute for experience Carli. A fitness professional with a good knowledge base, passion and a genuine interest in their clients is desirable. However, I believe that there is even greater value in the person who has a true understanding of what it is like to be lacking in fitness, overweight and all the struggles that come with defeating bad habits, negative thought patterns and associations that make it hard to try again when a workout goes wrong, an eating plan doesn’t work quite right or when the emotional tidalwave results in a binging episode. It is one thing to talk about making a lifestyle change, it is another to have lived through it. You know it first hand and you know how you’ve come to achieve success. Really, you’ve got the complete toolkit to make an awesome difference as a fitness instructor. Don’t underestimate yourself! :-)
